【Handan Good Samaritan】Yang Xiao: A Marrow Connection Lights up the Path of Life

On the afternoon of May 16, a life-saving relay unfolded with warmth at Shijiazhuang People’s Hospital. Yang Xiao, who had just completed a hematopoietic stem cell donation, received a bouquet from representatives of his company and the Quzhou County Red Cross Society. Overwhelmed with emotion, he said, “My hematopoietic stem cells will soon ‘settle’ in the patient’s body. A childhood wish is finally coming true!”

Yang Xiao shared that a story from his elementary school textbook, The Life Bridge Across the Strait, had illuminated his young heart like a beam of light. It was his first introduction to how bone marrow transplants could give leukemia patients a second chance at life, and how strangers could connect through blood to pass on hope. From that moment, a seed of compassion took root in him.

In 2021, after graduating from university, Yang Xiao joined Chenguang Biotech—a company with profound social responsibility. Starting as a small workshop, the firm grew into an industry leader over 25 years through technological innovation and hard work, securing China’s voice in the global plant extraction sector. Guided by its core value of “people and enterprise developing together,” the company has actively contributed to poverty alleviation, pandemic relief, and rural revitalization. Immersed in this culture, Yang Xiao’s resolve to donate hematopoietic stem cells grew stronger.

In May 2023, Yang Xiao visited the municipal Red Cross to register with the China Marrow Donor Program (CMDP), providing an 8-milliliter blood sample as a “life commitment.” Over a year later, he successfully matched with a leukemia patient. To prepare for the donation, he maintained a strict exercise regimen and adjusted his daily routine. His company fully supported him by offering paid leave and rehabilitation assistance, allowing him to focus entirely on fulfilling this life-saving mission.
